Cooperative Reading

The workshop will focus on Co-operative Reading strategies to engage students in the reading process.

Co-operative reading aids students to construct meaning from a variety of texts as well as a means of monitoring their reading to ensure that they are in fact understanding what they read. It is also a useful tool for motivating students with poor attitudes towards reading and can extend and inspire more capable readers.

Co-operative Reading is based on Glenda Raison’s work and uses the Four Roles/Resources of the Reader developed by Freebody and Luke.

In Co-operative Reading sessions students develop their own questions about a text and discuss their understandings with a small group of students of mixed or similar ability. Each child has a specific role.
