Creating a Conducive Classroom Environment

for Language Learning

This workshop will review current practice and research about language learning in the context of a school setting, with a focus on international schools.  It will focus on strategies at a classroom and whole school level that foster and promote the development of language.

It will also explore the idea of cultural backgrounds influencing the way students acquire a language, particularly English.

This discussion will focus around the Master’s research of the presenter where connections were made to the different ways that students from a range of cultural backgrounds approach the learning of English in an international setting.

I am originally from South Australia but my international teaching career has led me to New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Japan, Indonesia and now Singapore. Much of my teaching has been in schools rich in cultural diversity where language is evident in many forms. I also have extensive experience in working with children and adults where English is not the mother tongue. Language is a key factor in developing intercultural respect and tolerance and recognizing that people can be different, but also right.
