Supporting Literacy in the Primary Classroom:

Teaching Assistants as reading and writing facilitators

 

 

What does this workshop involve?

 

This workshop is aimed to build the necessary skills, knowledge and confidence to enable you to work competently with teachers and students within a literacy program and to contribute meaningfully to an educational workplace.

 

The workshop will touch on Facilitating Reading & Writing Development and will provide participants with an introduction to the skills needed to assist teaching staff to enhance the development of students’ reading and writing abilities.

 

This workshop is an example of the units covered in The Certificate III in Education - Language & Literacy Assistant. Students who complete this course successfully, are issued with an Australian nationally accredited award – those wishing to go on to study the Bachelor of Education can receive credit in two units of the course.

Liam King is Deputy Principal of the Australian International School in Singapore and has been working at AISS since 2005. He is currently studying a Doctor of Education at Melbourne University where he is examining the role of educational leadership and strategic planning in relation to creating a learning organisation.

 

In 2002 he completed his Master of Education at Melbourne University with a thesis on 'Effective Integration of Learning Technologies in the Middle Years of Schooling: a case study of an independent K - 12 coeducational college' and previous to this qualifications in Curriculum and Educational Administration. His professional background is with Catholic and Independent schools in Victoria including positions as Deputy Principal and Director of Learning Technologies from 1988 - 2004. He has extensive experience in the development and implementation of curriculum policy and programs from Preschool to Year 12.

 

He has also lectured in at undergraduate level in the area of Literacy and recently has run The Certificate III in Education - Language & Literacy Assistant for parents and teacher aides at AISS through the Australian Catholic University.
