ON THE DAY:

NB:  The Australian International School Singapore (AISS) has the following basic software/hardware available for your use:

-- Computers running Windows XP Pro SP2
-- Microsoft Office 2007
-- Internet Explorer version 7
-- Promethean Interactive Whiteboards, running the latest version software

AISS have various guest login accounts available for people.  They will be posted on the whiteboards in each classroom.

If you want to bring your own laptop in to hook up to a projector, that is possible.  Also note, wireless is available everywhere at AISS except the classrooms in the "A" block on the 3rd and 4th Levels of AISS.

If you really need/want Firefox as your Internet browser, that is possible.  Just let us know ahead of time.

If you need a clicker for Powerpoint presentations, please bring your own.  AISS don't have any.

Please think about any possible software/hardware mismatch that may occur.  Don't hesitate to ask specific technical questions.  We want to minimize the technical problems on the day!  Contact us at handsonliteracy@gmail.com.

IDEAS OF HOW TO SHARE YOUR MATERIALS ONLINE

AND/OR RECORD YOUR WORKSHOP

Please consider how you can make your workshop proceedings and make materials available after the conference, not only for your participants, but for people who couldn't make it to the conference and may be checking your wiki page afterwards.  NB: Our wiki will be up long after the conference ends, for people to reference -- in fact, it will be probably be available until the next Hands On Literacy conference, in two years' time.

Possibilities:

  • Enter text on your wiki page directly -- just as you updated your workshop description and biography before the conference.

  • Upload files to your workshop wiki page, whether Word or PDF documents or Powerpoint -- the wiki lets you do this very easily.  Simply edit your workshop wiki page and select the "Attach file" function on the toolbar.

See, for example, the page of links to uploaded files for the ECIS Conference in Nice this month -- Speaker Handouts

  •  Upload your Powerpoint slides to Slideshare, a free site for uploading and sharing slide presentations -- it's easy to sign up and easy to use.

See, for example, this collection of Powerpoint presentations from a recent National Library Board of Singapore conference posted on Slideshare -- Bridging Worlds 2008 Slideshows;

Here's another example of a slideshare:  Web 2 and Web 3D: to Literacy and Beyond -- by Vicki Davis, a teacher in the US who is a Web 2.0 educational leader;

  • Make your recommended booklists available online -- and add to them during/after your session, e.g., if participants in your workshop suggest others -- using free tools like LibraryThing and WorldCat.

See, for example, the links to online lists of books Jocelyn Holden and Sarah Eccleston has put up on their workshop wiki page, Knock-Out Books for Senior School, using WorldCat.  Similarly, here's an example of a LibraryThing list of PYP-related children's books I set up a few years ago.  (NB:  There is no limit to the number of books you can collect on a WorldCat list, though LibraryThing catalogs are only free for the 1st 200 books.)  Shelfari is another social booklist site, as is GoodReads.

NB: The combined list of books some of you sent us (that we gave to the booksellers who will be at the conference) is available online for anyone to view:  Books that presenters may use or promote

  • Make an audio recording -- a podcast -- of your session using a free online tool like Audacity.  The Australian International School has microphones you can borrow.

  •  Make a video of your session -- the Australian International School has video cameras and even student volunteers who might be able to be your film crew -- just ask us!.  Using free online tools like UstreamTV, you can easily be recorded -- all it takes is a camera and an internet connection.

 (If you do want to experiment with audio/video, please consider coming to AISS on the Friday afternoon -- between 4:00 and 5:00 -- in order to test out the equipment.  Just let us know -- handsonliteracy@gmail.com .)

 There are all kinds of Web 2.0 tools out there.  Here are two great websites about online tools to explore:
