Early Years Foreign Language Learning through Stories and Gesture

In recent years at Tanglin we decided that teaching students to name the items in their pencil case was neither challenging them nor giving them the tools to really communicate and build sentences. Firstly in Malay and French, and most recently in Chinese, we trialled and then launched a programme of gesture-based storytelling taught within the framework of 'response teaching'. We have called this approach GRT-Gesture Response Teaching. In the workshop we will explain the rationale, reality and benefits of the 2 core elements of this methodology and offer practical advice on how to make this a consistent and successful approach within a department. Here is a short videoclip of part of a Year 3 performance of Goldilocks in French after 12 half-hour lessons.

Audience: Language teachers

Presenters:
Graham Worthington: Indonesian/Malay language specialist. Introduced Indon/Malay language programmes in two previous schools in Australia and since 2005, at Tanglin Trust School. I have taught Indon/Malay and ESL to students across a wide age-range from age 4 to 16 years, as well as adults. I am heavily involved in humanitarian work in both the local and regional communities and have been recently appointed Tanglin's CSR Coordinator. Being fully convinced of the value of the GRT method, I am keen to share its considerable benefits with language teachers, both near and far.
Steve Morgan: French and Spanish specialist. Director of Languages at Tanglin Trust School since 2002, previously Head of Languages in Independent Schools in London, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands. I have run workshops on using ICT in Languages teaching in international schools in Singapore, KL and Bangkok. Although trained to teach 11-18 year-olds, my experience of being responsible for the introduction of Malay, French and Chinese in the early years has resulted in a passion for this methodology.
